History of the Faculty

Dating from 1290, the University of Coimbra is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest in Portugal. It comprises eight faculties (Arts, Law, Medicine, Science and Technology, Pharmacy, Economics, Psychology and Educational Sciences, and Sports Science and Physical Education) where today more than 20 000 students follow their studies.

The Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra was established in 1972, and began functioning the following year with a first degree in Economics. Throughout its 25 years, the Faculty of Economics has been expanding its teaching to other scientific areas and specialities, with the successive establishment of first degrees in Sociology (1988), Business Management (1989) and International Relations (1995), and various Master's degrees and postgraduate courses. Currently, students number approximately 2000 with 120 lecturers.

Location

Initially functioning in the "Gerais" section of the University, the Faculty of Economics was transferred in 1975 to the Olivais area (see map) of the city. Today, at the heart of Coimbra, this area still maintains a calm and quiet atmosphere.

Access

Access by road from outside the city to the faculty is quick and direct, and the area is serviced by good public transport.

Faculty Buildings

Of the buildings that temporarily housed the faculty, only the central one remains, now totally renovated and surrounded by others which have been purpose built and contain classrooms, library, computer centre, offices of the teaching staff and services.

Currently, the facilities offered by the Faculty of Economics include the following buildings: The Main Building (known as the "Casa dos Limas"), the Teaching Block, the Research Block and the Library.
